Utah CIS: Looking for an Internal University Job — Why Academic and Hospital Positions Follow Different Paths

You’re already employed by the University of Utah and want to explore another position.

Maybe you’re interested in transferring to a different department, moving into a supervisory role, or finding an opportunity within University of Utah Health.

You open Utah CIS and search for internal job opportunities.

But something seems missing.

The position you expected to find doesn’t appear in the university’s internal job listings.

That doesn’t necessarily mean the job has been removed or filled.

The University of Utah and University of Utah Health Hospitals & Clinics maintain separate internal recruitment systems.

Understanding that distinction can make a significant difference when searching for your next position.

Start With University Internal Jobs in CIS

For university-side internal positions, the University of Utah directs current employees to the University Internal Jobs tile in Campus Information Services.

You can locate the tile by searching for its name in Utah CIS.

This section provides access to certain positions intended for current university employees.

These opportunities may not appear in exactly the same way as public job listings.

If you’re already working for the university, checking internal postings is worthwhile before relying exclusively on the public careers website.

Hospitals & Clinics Uses a Different System

University of Utah Health Hospitals & Clinics manages its recruitment through a separate applicant tracking system.

That includes internal opportunities for current Hospitals & Clinics employees.

The university’s employment website provides a dedicated current-employee route for these positions.

Its internal career dashboard supports activities such as reviewing opportunities, maintaining a career profile, managing applications, and uploading relevant professional documents.

Don’t assume every Hospitals & Clinics opening will appear inside the university-side CIS job tile.

The Department Matters More Than the Job Title

Suppose you’re looking for an IT position.

You might expect every university technology job to appear in one location.

However, the University of Utah specifically explains that technology positions can exist in both the university and Hospitals & Clinics organizations.

The same distinction can apply to clinical roles.

A job title alone doesn’t necessarily tell you which recruitment system manages the position.

Check the employing organization before deciding where to apply.

Academic Health Positions Aren’t Necessarily Hospital Positions

The university also distinguishes academic and research opportunities from Hospitals & Clinics employment.

A position associated with a medical school or health sciences department isn’t automatically managed through the hospital recruitment system.

For example, a research coordinator working within an academic department may follow a different recruitment process from a hospital-based clinical position.

Look at the organization identified in the posting rather than relying only on words such as medical, health, or clinical.

Internal Postings May Have Different Eligibility Rules

Some positions are intended specifically for existing employees.

Others are open to both internal and external applicants.

There can also be postings restricted to a particular department.

The university’s HR guidance distinguishes university-wide internal postings from department-only recruitment.

That means an opening you hear about from a coworker may not necessarily be available through the general internal job list.

Review the eligibility requirements before assuming you’re qualified to apply as an internal candidate.

Don’t Assume Your Current Position Guarantees Eligibility

Working for the University of Utah doesn’t automatically mean you’re eligible for every internal posting.

Requirements may involve your employment classification, the recruiting organization, or the specific vacancy.

Some positions also have minimum qualifications involving education, certifications, licenses, or professional experience.

Internal status can determine which opportunities you’re allowed to consider, but it doesn’t replace the qualifications listed in the job description.

Read the Full Job Posting

Before applying, review more than the position title.

Pay attention to the department, work location, job responsibilities, required qualifications, and expected schedule.

A position with a familiar title may involve substantially different work in another part of the university.

For Hospitals & Clinics opportunities, the university’s career guidance identifies information such as requisition number, employment type, shift, department, and location as useful posting details.

These can help you distinguish similar openings.

Keep Your Career Information Current

For employees using the Hospitals & Clinics internal career system, the university describes a dashboard that supports career profile updates and document uploads.

Depending on the position, relevant materials may include an updated resume or professional credentials.

If you’ve gained experience since your last application, make sure your submitted materials reflect it.

Don’t assume that your existing employee record automatically communicates every accomplishment or qualification to a recruiting manager.

An Internal Application Isn’t an Automatic Transfer

Submitting an application doesn’t mean your current department has approved a transfer.

Recruitment, selection, and departmental transition are separate stages.

If you’re selected for a new position, additional coordination may be necessary regarding your current responsibilities and transition date.

Follow the applicable university or Hospitals & Clinics HR procedures rather than assuming the job application itself changes your employment assignment.

Don’t Search Only One System

This is the most practical point.

If you’re interested in opportunities across the University of Utah, searching only the University Internal Jobs tile may limit what you find.

The university explicitly recommends checking both university-side and Hospitals & Clinics opportunities when your interests overlap.

That advice is particularly relevant for administrative, technology, facilities, and certain healthcare-related positions.

Know Which HR Team to Contact

The University of Utah identifies separate recruitment contacts for the two areas.

For university-side internal job postings, the relevant contact is University Human Resources.

For Hospitals & Clinics recruitment, employees are directed to Hospitals and Clinics Human Resources.

If you need assistance with a specific vacancy, identify the recruiting organization before contacting support.

Including the job title and requisition number, when available, makes the question easier to route.

A Missing Job Isn’t Necessarily a Portal Problem

If a vacancy isn’t appearing where you expected, consider several possibilities.

The position may belong to the other recruitment system.

It may be restricted to a particular group of applicants.

The posting may have closed.

Or the position may be listed under a different title or department.

Check those possibilities before concluding that Utah CIS is displaying an incomplete job list.

Search According to the Organization

Utah CIS provides an important starting point for university employees exploring internal opportunities.

But the university’s organizational structure means that one job-search route doesn’t necessarily cover every internal position.

For university-side vacancies, use the University Internal Jobs resource.

For Hospitals & Clinics opportunities, follow the separate current-employee recruitment process.

And when your professional interests cross both areas, check both.

The University of Utah operates multiple recruitment paths. Finding the right internal opportunity often starts with identifying which part of the university is hiring—not simply searching for the right job title.
